I’ve been watching the women’s World Cup and apart from the abysmal officiating I’ve noticed what a joke VAR has been. I was very much in favour of it until seeing it in action in France. Now it seriously worries me. Apart from the occasions where it has come out of nowhere, it also takes far too long to make a decision and results in ridiculous amounts of added time.
Let’s hope there are strict rules concerning it’s implementation in the PL, presumably like it was for the European Champions League last season, which was just about bearable.

Now that I’ve seen VAR in action I feel a bit happier about it. Play has not been particularly delayed and they stress that they’re not re-refereeing. I gather they cover four points:
Goals Penalties Red cards Mistaken identity
Also, I like the new goal kick law.

Anyone seeing the Liverpool v Man City game has got to see what a farce VAR is. I don’t object to it’s use, just the way it’s being used.

I hate it Al. Its making the game sterile. Keep going at the rate it is and football will become as exciting as snooker.

The more I see of it, the more I hate it. I’d rather put up with occasional referee/linesman mistakes, annoying as they were. As you say Rich, it’s making the game sterile. There are more important things they could address without new equipment or rule changes. One obvious one being time wasting. Referees already have the power to solve that. They just choose not to.

Yesterday showed another key flaw in car for me. Chelsea v Spurs. Clear red card for lo celso not seen by referee on the pitch. Then not given by var due to ‘human error ‘
How can it possibly work when the people making the decisions make mistakes and have clear bias on occasion?

Only a matter of time before some bright spark at Sky realises that whilst they are messing around with a VAR decision there's an opportunity for a 'quick message from our sponsors' and the game is totally ruined.
As usual with football, poorly thought through, poorly planned, poorly implemented and poorly applied.
It could have been a good tool but they've made a total pigs ear of it.

There have been a few controversial decisions recently and many suggestions on what to do.
My suggestion is to put a time limit on the decision. If the incident is so tight that it cannot be determined inside 30 seconds the decision on the field should stand and assistant referees should revert to flagging straight away if he sees an offside. If the ref isn’t comfortable with that then he has the option to check it himself.
I see far too many occasions when VAR is taking way too long. There will still be mistakes but many less unnecessary holdups.

My opinion is scrap it. Football was so much simpler 30 years ago without 500 cameras at every game scrutinising every decision. A straightforward offside rule, simple hand ball rules, it`s all become far too technical and complicated.
By the time I am able to go to a game again, which is probably going to be 2021/22 season, I think the habit will be broken and I may well have lost total interest.
In an age where we still have top class Olympic sports decided by opinion (Gymnastics, Diving, Equestrian events etc) why do we need to have all this shit ruining the game for spectators?
