There have been a few occasions lately where something has happened (not necessarily VAR related) but given me food for thought.
Injured players:
One rule that really annoys me is when an injured player has to leave the field after receiving treatment. That is even if the player was the victim of a foul. It gets worse if the player concerned is injured while being fouled resulting in a penalty and he happens to be the usual penalty taker. If the goalkeeper commits the foul and gets injured in the process, he gets to stay on the field to face the penalty. Surely the referee is capable of using his judgment. My opinion is that only players injured whilst committing a foul should have to leave the field.
There is a grey area. That’s when a player goes down off the ball with a muscular or non contact injury. Again, the referee should be allowed to use his discretion.
Shirt removal:
If ever there was a totally unnecessary rule is when a goal scorer gets booked for removing their shirt during celebrations. Much as I personally don’t like it, it does no harm to anyone. The main thing for me is that they shouldn’t make contact with the crowd, yet that doesn’t result in a booking, unless they also remove their shirt.
Time wasting by goalkeepers:
When the back pass rule was created it included a six second limit from when the goalie picks the ball up. That rule was almost never enforced and eventually it was done away with. Now you see goalies regularly just falling on the ball and staying there for several seconds before slowly getting up. Samba does it but so does everyone else. If they waste time taking a goal kick they rightfully get booked, but there’s no difference.
These are just a few of my pet peeves, but I’d love to hear yours or simply comment on mine.
